The Jitterbug, issued quarterly in lieu of a monthly newsletter, is a historical magazine averaging 28 to 32 pages.  It is packed with information on the Clinchfield Railroad, relating to its history, operations, equipment, terrain, and personnel.  The magazine began as a 16 page edition with a black and white cover, and has now evolved to its present size featuring a full color cover, front and back.  The December 2002 edition reached 44 pages, and will probably hold the record for quite some time.  Since the magazine serves as the chapter's newsletter, it is free to the members of the organization.  All back issues, dating from the initial September 1994 edition to the present, are available for purchase by our newest members, and by others wishing to secure them for their Clinchfield collections.  A complete list of their contents and prices is available upon request.

   March 2003                 December 2002           June 2002                 March 2002          September 2001

     A. R. Poteat has been the editor of The Jitterbug since the first issue, and has done most of the writing, drawn from his experience as a 43 year veteran of the Clinchfield Railroad and successors Seaboard System and CSX Transportation.  Other capable writers have come to his assistance with great articles from time to time. For instance, Scott Jessee, Supervisor Train Operations for CSX in Erwin, TN, and a former Clinchfield dispatcher, has contributed several interesting articles in recent issues, and is currently writing more articles for future editions.

In addition to the feature stories, each edition has regular scheduled departments.  One such department is our "Down at the Depot" segment, which spotlights one local depot each quarter.  Another popular department is "Railroading a Century Ago", which consists of news excerpts extracted by C. K. Marsh from "The Railway Gazette" for the same period one hundred years previous.

Membership in the chapter includes annual subscription to The Jitterbug, as well as to subscription to the national organization's slick paper historical magazine, The National Railway Bulletin, which covers railroad history on a national level.

For sample copy of latest issue of the magazine, remit check to Carolina Clinchfield Chapter, PO Box 412, Bostic, NC 28018, for $5.00, plus $1.00 to cover postage and handling.

March 2008 2007 Edition

Due out on March 4th, the latest edition contains articles by Scott Jessee on Steinman Coal Company, The Clinchfield Salesman, by Gale Legg, The 100th Anniversary of the Road's Arrival at Marion, NC, by Ray Poteat, and a Branch Banter article by William Cannon entitled Engines Roar.   The magazine is now printed on offset press, on slick paper throughout, and bears many recent improvements.
